L'Aquila

L'Aquila is situated in the heart of the mountainous region of the Abruzzi at a height of 721 metres above sea level. The city is flanked on the one side by the Velino and Sirente mountain ranges, on the other by the Laga mountains and the Gran Sasso range. The original site was on the hill dividing the territory of Amiterno from that of Forcona. The city was founded about 1240 by the Holy Roman emperor Frederick II and became an episcopal see in 1257. It become an important centre in the Middle Ages, and was contended for by the Angevin dynasty and Aragonese and later passed to the Kingdom of Naples. Notable buildings are present in L'Aquila, such as the majestic castle, the churches of San Bernardino and Santa Maria di Collemaggio. The medieval city walls are still largely extant.
